Overview

B.Sc. in Cardiac Perfusion is a 3-year undergraduate course in Bioscience. Perfusion, as the science of movement of fluids in the body, facilitates those functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory systems. The course essentially involves an advanced study of the heart’s physiology, pathology, and associated equipment used to support, or assume the function of the heart or lungs during medical procedures. Perfusion technologists prepare and operate the heart-lung machine, and other sophisticated equipment as directed by healthcare physicians. Such perfusionists utilize technology such as heart/ lung machines, ventricular assistance devices, artificial hearts, as well as pharmacological interventions to maintain the patient’s cardiac functions during the period of circulatory support.

Cardiovascular perfusion is the science of providing extracorporeal circulation in order to artificially support and temporarily replace a patient’s respiratory and circulatory systems. Clinical Perfusionists are expert members of the cardiac surgical team, and provide life saving support of patients requiring extra corporeal circulation, including but not limited to major cardiothoracic, vascular and transplant surgeries, as well as support of the critically-ill patient. Cardiovascular Perfusionists are important members of the open-heart surgical team whose primary role is to conduct cardiopulmonary bypass using a heart-lung machine and other ancillary equipment. They closely monitor the patient's blood flow and other vital signs during open heart surgery and are also responsible for administering intravenous fluids, blood products and anesthetic drugs

Perfusionists are also experts of other life support equipment such as ventricular assist devices and intra-aortic balloon pumps. The primary aim of B.Sc Cardiac Perfusion Technology is to academically and clinically prepare the cardiovascular perfusion student for professional practice. The curriculum focuses on developing a strong knowledge base in cardiothoracic anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, as well as pharmacology, fetal and neonatal cardiac development and perfusion science.

Cardiovascular perfusion is the art of supplementing extracorporeal flow, so as to artificially bolster and supplant a patient's respiratory and circulatory frameworks. Clinical Perfusionists are expert members of the cardiac surgical team, and provide life-saving support to patients requiring extra corporeal circulation, including, but not limited to, major cardiothoracic, vascular and transplant surgeries, as well as support to critically-ill heart patients.

Cardiovascular Perfusionists are primarily responsible for conducting cardiopulmonary bypass using a heart-lung machine and other ancillary equipment. They screen the patient's blood stream and other imperative signs during the open-heart surgery, and are likewise in charge of controlling intravenous liquids, blood items, and anesthetic drugs. Perfusionists are also experts at handling other life support equipment such as ventricular assistance devices and intra-aortic balloon pumps. The curriculum focuses on developing in eligible candidates:

·         A strong knowledge base in cardiothoracic anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology.

·         Professional familiarity with concepts of pharmacology, fetal and neonatal cardiac development, and perfusion science.

·         Skills regarding operation of extracorporeal circulation equipment during medical situations where it is necessary to support or replace the patient’s cardiopulmonary/circulatory functions.

·         Skills for proper management of physiologic functions by monitoring the necessary variables.

Eligibility

·         Successful completion of the 10+2 level of education in the Science stream, completed from a recognized university.

·         A minimum aggregate score of 50% (45% for SC/ST candidates) at the 10+2 level.

Admission Process

Most institutes offering the course admit students based on performance in a relevant entrance test, often followed by a round of personal interview, wherein their general aptitude for the course is tested. Admission process generally varies across colleges.

Career Prospects

Perfusionists, for the most part, work in healing centers, surgery, and ICUs, aiding heart and lung surgeries. The Perfusionist is responsible for keeping the surgical team updated on the patient's condition all through surgery. They work the heart-lung machines that keep a patient alive during critical procedures such as the open-heart surgery. Perfusionists are likewise key personnel in placing and managing patients on ventricular assistance, during heart, lung, or liver transplants. Adequately trained, perfusionists can go in for instructing, and leading research, aside from roles requiring active medical involvement.

Cardiovascular Technologist Cardiovascular Technicians use a variety of procedures and instruments to diagnose and treat heart disease and vascular problems. The entry-level technicians perform electrocardiograms (EKGs), and may set up stress tests and Holter monitoring. With their experience and additional training, such technicians can perform more diagnostic tasks, by using sonography and other types of non-invasive procedures as well as advanced life support techniques.
