The M.
D. S. in Oral Medicine & Radiology is a three year
Postgraduate program. Oral Medicine and Radiology is a specialized
branch in dentistry that deals with diseases of oral and
surrounding structures, oral manifestation of systemic diseases
and oral and dental treatment of medically compromised
patients.
Overview
The Course includes
everything related to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of dental and
maxillofacial diseases. Through its subjects of study, namely, Applied Basic
Sciences, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiography, and Oral medicine and
therapeutics, and laboratory investigations associated with the same, the
course promises to train students that have completed their bachelor’s degree
in dental sciences, to become hardened dental professionals. As defined by the
Dental Council of India, Oral Medicine and radiology is the specialty of
dentistry concerned with the basic diagnostic procedures and techniques useful
in recognising diseases or oral tissues of local and constitutional origin, and
their management.
Graduates
from this course are likely to be recruited into fields of academia, becoming
professors of dentistry or researching further in the field, or they can work
in hospitals or clinics as various medical professional, or even in the
administrative side of the field. Graduates can work as assistant general
managers, oral pathologists, dental hygienists, dental surgeons, dental lab
technician, and in other such positions.
The
course is 3 years long and is divided into 4 papers. The entrance test is
normally a 3 hour computer based test conducted in English with a total of 240
questions and no negative marking. The syllabus would include topics from the
BDS level course in the subject. Armed with their BDS marks and their entrance
test marks, students can proceed to fill out the online or offline application
form for the respective universities as the case may be.
This
course is best suited for candidates who are interested in oral medicine and
wish to obtain basic and advanced knowledge of all dental and maxillofacial
diseases and learn the skills necessary to manage them. They should have
knowledge of all general dental practices and skills involved in prevention,
diagnosis, and treatment of the aforementioned diseases.
Eligibility
Candidates wishing to
apply for the course need to have passed their bachelors degree in dental
sciences with a minimum of 55% marks. Certain universities offer a direct
entrance test for admission in the college while others require you to have
already given any of the standard tests for MDS in Oral Medicine and Radiology
such as NEET MDS.
Admission Process
In most institutes for
Masters in Technology in VSLI Design and Embedded system candidates that fulfil
the eligibility and have given either any common entrance test for MDS or the
one conducted by the university, can fill out the physical or online application
forms. In certain colleges the entrance test will not matter and the
admission would be merit based.

Masters in Dental
Sciences in Oral Medicine and Radiology is an extremely specified field of
study. Those who chose to follow this degree through to a postgraduate level
