MD
Microbiology is a three year Post Graduate course. Eligibility for the
course is MBBS degree from the reputed university/institute approved by medical
council of India. Admissions for such course are on the basis of counselling
after clearing entrance tests depending on the colleges.
Overview
Microbiology includes many sub-disciplines
like virology, mycology, parasitological and bacteriology.Microbiologists are
people who specialize in the field of microbiology. They are scientists who
study organisms and infectious agents that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
They study the interactions of microorganisms with humans and other organisms
that exist and affect our lives.
As a result, people who have studied science as the main subject
opt for building their career in the field of microbiology. While a Ph.D. or
master's degree is required for Research & Development positions, Bachelor
degree holders have employment potential as laboratory technicians, aids to
biological scientists or as biology teachers. Medical microbiologists also work
in hospitals and Health Protection Agency laboratories.
Students need to have MBBS degree or any other equivalent
bachelor degree to be eligibile for MD Microbiology course. The students
must complete their one year internship program before applying for the program
from any reputed hospital in India.
For admission in post-graduate course, the student has to appear
in Post Graduate Medical entrance which AIIMS PG, NEET PG. Some universities
also offer admission on the basis of the marks secured in MBBS programme and
work experience.
In
India, various colleges & universities offer courses in Microbiology
surgeon. Most of the universities provide courses at the postgraduate level.
A post-graduate degree in microbiology gives you the opportunity
to work at science laboratories and pathology labs. If you have a PG in
microbiology, you can work in microbiology based industries like pharmacy,
dairy, breweries, distilleries, enzyme, etc. and you also can pursue PhD.
Students who complete PhD can take up teaching at universities and PG colleges.
They can also take up a post-doctoral research.
This
field is also covering other paths for career like virology mycology,
bacteriology, and medical microbiologists and parasitological. All these fields
are to identify the cure for different diseases in one and another way. There
are many fields which have scope for these professionals because of their
ability to control and identify the critical points such as Medical, research,
water industry, nanotechnology, chemical etc.
A
microbiologist can innovate new diagnostic kits, discover new drugs, teach,
research, etc. Recent international developments are also responsible for a
renewed interest in microbiology.
Major Job positions
Environmental microbiologist
Analytical chemists
usually work in a lab, and within a team of other scientists. These
professionals study chemical compounds and their makeup.
Food Quality Assurance Scientist
Clinical laboratory
technologists usually work in hospitals or other clinical settings performing
complex tests, analysis and specimen examinations.
Food Microbiologist
Materials scientists
often specialize in a specific material. A materials scientist might focus on
materials such as ceramics, metals or synthetics.
Technical Brewer
A Pharma Assistant helps in administrative
duties in a Pharmaceutical company.
Medical Microbiology
Medical microbiology
includes studies of bacteria, viruses, and parasites, all of which can be seen
as the cause, and often part of the cure, for various diseases.
Lab Assistant
Lab Assistants are
generally employed at clinics, pharmaceutical companies and education
institutes’ laboratories. Their job is to assist in experiments conducted in
laboratories.
Biomedical Scientist
Biomedical scientists
are responsible to carry many scientific and laboratory tests on samples and
fluids of tissue to diagnose and helping clinicians to treat a disease. These
treatments effectiveness is being evaluated by the biomedical scientist.
