Ayurveda
is considered the science of life and wellbeing. It is the oldest documented
body of holistic medical knowledge known to man. This treatment stream
originated in India and is believed to be over 6,000 years old. The earliest
knowledge of Ayurveda was codified into a text called Charaka Samhita by
Charaka, the legendary physician, in about 2nd Centrury BC. Ayurveda has been
in practice for centuries and its efficacies are proven. Today, Ayurveda
treatment compliments modern Allopathic medicine in treating many diseases more
efficiently and effectively.
Ashtamgam
is guided by living legends of Ayurveda – highly trained, clinically
experienced traditional practitioners as well as trained Ayurveda doctors with
long years of experience and repute who hail from Traditional Ashtavaidya
Families. Together, they have created a new benchmark in the Ayurvedic health
science, treatment and research. Asthamgam has a both Out Patient and In
Patient treatment services. The OP department offers treatments for Shalya
Tantram, Shalakya Tantram, Kaya Chikitsa, Panchakarma, Kumarabruthyam etc. The
IP department offers excellent room facilities, consultation with doctors,
Ayurvedic food, Ashtamgam Care Units and other facilities.
At
Ashtamgam, consultation is offered by eminent physicians, including the
Ashtavaidyas, and the treatments are carried out under the direct supervision
of experts. Ashtavaidyas, the traditional Ayurvedic practitioners of Kerala,
are master physicians in all the 8 branches of Ayurveda, and hence the name.
Visiting Acharyas at Ashtamgam includes Ashtavaidyas, Arya Vaidyas and
Specialist Physicians/Surgeons in different branches. Their accurate diagnosis
and prescription, combined with authentic medicines, hasten the healing
process. Further, in order to achieve complete cure, the treatment also
includes the recommendations of Jyothishastra and Vaasthushastra, which are
traditional Indian sciences that share their roots with Ayurveda. Jyothishastra
advice by renowned astrologist Kanippayyur Narayanan Namboodirlppad and
Vaasthushastra advice by Kanippayyur Krishnan Namboodirippad, a doyen in the
field, are offered at Ashtamgam, by prior appointment. This method of treatment
is unique to Ashtamgam.
The
driving force behind Ashtamgam Ayurveda Chikitsalayam and Vidyapeedham is a
collection of minds of renowned and widely respected doyens of Ayurveda, who
have united by a larger purpose of rebuilding Indian values and culture debased
by themodern ways of life. The guidance and service of illustrious
practitioners of Ayurveda, the judicious mix of traditional practices and
modern technology, strict adherence to the quality of treatment will all form
the corner stone’s of the institution’s exemplary service. Ayurveda, the
science of life and healthcare, is an invaluable stream of knowledge
originating from the wealth of ancient Indian wisdom developed by rishis, or
holy sages.India’s contribution to the world, however, is not just its amazing
repertoire of hereditary knowledge, but a unique method of teaching as well –
the gurukula system. The teachings of Ayurveda should be passed on to students
in a manner consistent with the purpose and philosophy of this science. The
limitations of thewestern system of institutionalized education adopted for
Ayurveda may well have had an adverse impact on this system of healthcare
itself. With a view to restore the sanctity of age-old values and practices,
recreate the genial atmosphere of the guru-shishya relationship, and to
reinstate Ayurveda to its lost glory, we are giving shape to a new paradigm
of excellence in Ayurvedic education – Ashtamgam Ayurveda Chikitsalayam
and Vidyapeedham.
What
the modern world now demands is a medical science that can respond effectively
to the health care needs of today. Through this initiative, we intend
toredefine Ayurveda’s relevance in the present-day context and make it a system
of healthcare the world can fully depend on. We look at this venture as ahumble
step towards realizing the motto of Ayurveda, as propounded by sages – “loka
samastha sukhino bhavanthu”
