The Health
Sciences campus comprises of the School of Medicine, the School of Dentistry,
the College of Nursing, the School of Pharmacy and the Amrita Center for
Nanosciences co-located with Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences. Committed to
providing value-based medical education, these educational institutions strive
to instill the qualities of dedication and service in the youth.
Amrita School
of Medicine is founded on the highest principles, with an emphasis on service,
compassion, charity and excellence through education. The blending of the vital
ingredients of competence and compassion is an extension of the vision and
inspiration of our founder, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, from whom we draw
our strength and dedication and whose life exemplifies these high principles in
every action. The nurturing of these values at the Amrita Health Sciences
Campus complements a fine technical education by enhancing skills with a unique
understanding and compassion for the patient. The faculty is dedicated to these
sustaining values and has diligently worked on the curricula, techniques and
methods that will be of the greatest help to the students.
Amrita Center
for Nanosciences lead the way in cutting-edge research and are engaged in
several funded projects that aim to succor pressing humanitarian issues. The
Center was established in May 2006 as one of the seven Nanotechnology Centers
funded by the Government of India under the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology
initiative and is the only one in the biomedical area. The Amrita Center for
Nanosciences (ACNS) is an independent Center under the Amrita Vishwa
Vidyapeetham with both research and academic components. There are over 50
students currently doing M. Tech. or Ph. D. in Nanosciences or Nanomedical
Sciences. The Center is engaged in pioneering work in the development of
natural tissues and organs through tissue engineering using biodegradable
scaffolds, within which cells are made to attach and proliferate in a
controlled fashion. The Center is also conducting research in cancer
nanotechnology for the purposes of early detection and therapy of cancer, the
development of biocompatible devices using nanomaterials and the development of
biomedical nanosensors.
The School of
Dentistry was inaugurated by Smt. Sushama Swaraj, the then Minister for Health
and Family Welfare and parliamentary affairs of the Government of India. It is
housed in a self-contained four-storey building, having a built-up area of
154,000 sq. ft., and is one of the biggest dental colleges in Asia. The
School attracts a diverse patient population. Students have the opportunity to
acquire a full range of clinical experiences, both within the dental school and
the at the community level, including treatment of emergency cases, medically
compromised cases, and physically and mentally challenged patients. Students
become adept at attending to the special needs of patients who have complex
medical histories and may already be receiving treatment for a number of
diseases. By serving this varied segment of the population, students come to
understand the prevalence of certain diseases and oral health problems,
comprehend the patterns of disease, and learn from the outcomes of selected
therapies.
The College
of Nursing is committed to excellence in nursing education, research and
development of leadership skills and human values. Situated within the Health
Science campus in an exclusive building, the institute provides an ambience,
comprising state-of-the-art infrastructure, unparalleled technical expertise,
diligent faculty, and above all, the instilling of values based on the rich
Indian tradition and ancient culture. Sri Shatrughnan Sinha, the then Union
Minister for Health and Family Welfare, inaugurated the College on 1st November
2002. The College of Nursing is recognized by the Kerala Nurses and Midwives
Council and Indian Nursing Council.
Established
in 1997 as a Center of Excellence in the field of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the
location of School of Pharmacy at the heart of Kochi campus makes it ideally
situated to offer high quality infrastructure for training and research in
Pharmaceutical Sciences. The goal of the school is not only to excel in the
field of education, but also to conduct social and charitable outreach programs
and thereby mould a new battalion of highly competent pharmacy professionals.
The school gives due weightage to industrial, hospital, community, clinical and
research aspects of pharmacy. It utilizes the wide variety of resources
available at the various centers of the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences
and the institution for providing theoretical and practical training and
orientation to the students. The School gives equal importance to industrial
pharmacy and research aspects of clinical pharmacy. The students are encouraged
and motivated to take part in the charitable outreach work of Amrita Institute
of Medical Sciences (AIMS). The Amrita School of Pharmacy is recognized
by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), All India Council for Technical
Education (AICTE) and other statutory bodies and agencies.

PRINCIPAL’S
MESSAGE
Prof.
K. T. Moly
Principal, College of Nursing
In the
21st century, the health challenges facing the nation have shifted
dramatically. The need for personal connection, listening, and caring has never
been higher. Nurses consistently rank first in every consumer poll as the most
trusted professionals. Nursing is an extremely demanding occupation that
encompasses a wide array of challenges. It can also be a very rewarding
profession for those suited for it. Caring for ailing patients is more than
just a career – It is a calling. As patient needs and care environments have
become more complex, nurses need to attain requisite competencies to deliver
high - quality care.
These
competencies include leadership, health policy, system improvement, research
and evidence - based practice and teamwork and collaboration as well as
competency in specific content areas such as community, geriatrics
etc.Competencies also must move from task - based proficiencies to higher -
level competencies that provide a foundation for care management knowledge and
decision - making skills under a variety of clinical situations and care
settings. Hence improving the education system and achieving a more educated
workforce is the need of the hour. Nurses with higher education are needed to
teach future generations of nurses and to conduct research that becomes the
basis for improvements in nursing science and practice. Amrita College of
Nursing as a team works on this philosophy under the guidance of our beloved
Amma.
