About B. Tech. Engineering Physics

B. Tech. Engineering Physics is an undergraduate degree program for four academic years. Basic eligibility to take admission in this course is 10+2 pass with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

This course is designed to impart the necessary knowledge about engineering and a specialization in physics and applied physics.

This program is structured specifically to make the students understand all the concepts of physics and their practical applications which include experimental techniques and modern equipment. This is a rare course offered only by four IITs throughout the country.

B. Tech. Engineering Physics: What is it About?

B. Tech.Engineering Physics course is about the engineering skills and the specialization in the study of physics and its applications. The course is a combination of the theoretical concepts and application of the theory part of the concepts of physics. It is a vigorous study of concepts like semiconductor devices, electromagnetics, thermodynamics etc.

This course ensures employment in the educational field if a person wants to pursue further study in the physics field and in the research field. B. Tech. Engineering Physics course provides the applied knowledge of physics and science disciplines.

The course is designed very efficiently. It is a combination of theory and practice. The first two semesters of the course are general for all the students of different specializations, however, from third semester onwards, students are taught according to their specialization.

B. Tech. Engineering Physics syllabus has a combination of core courses and electives which are mandatory for every student, along with these, students are also required to undergo a training program or an internship outside the college campus.

B. Tech. Engineering Physics: Eligibility

The minimum eligibility criteria for a student to take admission in B. Tech. Engineering Physics course is that the student must have passed in the class XII examination which subjects as Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics from any recognized board.

B. Tech. Engineering Physics: Admission Process

Admission to B. Tech. Engineering Physics is done through entrance exam conducted at national level. Since this course is offered by mostly IITs only so admission criteria for this course is JEE Advanced. However JEE Main is the first stage for appearing in JEE Advanced. Some institutes other than IITs offer admission on the basis of JEE Main.

Selection Process:

The students are selected on the basis of their performance in the entrance exam and marks in board exams. Weighatge given to entrance exam is 60% and board marks is 40%.  After which an All India Rank List is prepared and shortlisted candidates are called for the counseling session held at IITs on the basis of that rank list. During these counseling sessions, students are asked to choose their choice of engineering from various courses given to them on the basis of their ranks in the entrance exam.

B. Tech. Engineering Physics: Who should opt?

Any student who has a passionate inclination towards the subject of physics and wants to learn it through an engineering perspective should opt for this course. This course is about the new developments in the field of physics, concepts of high technology and instrumentation.

The course provides a platform to the students to learn the core courses offered to all engineering students which develop the skills and aptitude necessary for an engineer along with the conceptual and theoretical aspects of physics which are essential for the specialization in physics engineering.

B. Tech. Engineering Physics: Career Prospects

The major career options after B. Tech. Engineering Physics are in organizations like Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Microsoft, Applied Research International and National Physical Laboratory mainly, but also many other research institutes in India and abroad.

Academic Options after B.Tech. Engineering Physics

If you are enthusiastic about pursuing research in Physics, you have the option of pursuing Ph.D. in Physics from a reputed university. Apart from this, you can pursue M.Tech in the same specialization. There are various universities in India and abroad that offer masters or doctoral program for engineering physics graduates.
