Overview

MDS in Periodontics is a 3- year postgraduate program in dentistry. This branch of dentistry deals with diseases of the supporting and investing structures of the teeth including the gums, cemented and periodontal membranes, and alveolar bone. The course’s curriculum covers the concepts and processes involved in identifying the techniques aimed at preventing the occurrence of and curing the spread of damage already caused by oral infection.

Students enrolled in the course are offered the opportunity to contribute as qualified dentists to the field of health care. Some of the treatment methods carried out by Periodontists include scaling and root planning, gum surgeries, curettage in dentistry, and alveolar bone surgeries. A General Dentist may be able to treat gingivitis, the mildest version of gum disease, but more advanced forms of the disease call for a visit with a Board-certified Periodontist. Equipped with extensive training and expertise, Periodontists can step in to perform surgical and non-surgical procedures to address periodontal diseases.

Periodontics is the area of dentistry that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the tissues that support or surround the teeth, such as the gum tissue and the jaw bones. It also involves the upkeep of the health, function, and looks of the dental tissues. Upon graduating from dental school, a Periodontist is needed to spend several years in a residency program, studying the mechanisms of periodontal inflammation and effective treatments for the condition. Bacteria commonly found in the mouth can cause diseases and inflammation in the gums. Those diseased gums can then trigger serious problems throughout the rest of the mouth. When left untreated, inflammation that affects the periodontal tissue can attack other structures in the mouth, such as the teeth and the jawbone, which is why, Periodontists’ role in dental healthcare is vital.
