M.Tech. in Food and Nutrition is a 2- year full-time postgraduate course divided across 4 semesters. The course explores on an advanced level, subjects such as food chemistry, development production, and food safety. The program aims to prepare trained professionals to effectively function in areas such as manufacturing, retail, research, health, engineering, and agricultural industries.The course offers a comprehensive multidisciplinary study of the nature and quality of food produce and of nutritional requirements for good health in people. Candidates pursue coursework in areas of nutrition, food management, and food science, based on a broad foundation in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Physiology, and Behavioural Management.
Enrolled students are imparted advanced lessons in the composition, quality, and safety of food products, properties of food ingredients, the relationship between metabolism and utilization of food nutrients in the human body, food- related ailments, and influence of exercise and fitness on health.
As an academic discipline, Nutrition is the science of the relationship between diet and health. The purpose of a postgraduate course in Nutrition Science is to explore and explain the metabolic and physiological responses of the body to diet. Nutritionists are health professionals who specialize in this area of study, and enrolled students are trained to provide safe, evidence-based dietary advice and interventions.
Solving deficiencies, excesses and imbalances in diet can produce negative impacts on health. This may lead to diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and scurvy, or osteoporosis, psychological and behavioural problems, and the program is designed to address the growing need of preventing and treating such food- related ailments.
As a minimum criterion of eligibility, the course requires the candidate to have completed graduation in the science stream from a recognized institute, with Physics, Chemistry and Math as main subjects, and a minimum aggregate score of 60%.
Admission to the course is based on the candidate’s performance in a relevant entrance test, such as the national level online GATE. In addition to this, some institutes offering the course in the country conduct their own entrance exams for assessing and shortlisting students.
