Master of
Technology (M.Tech.) in Renewable Energy is a 2- year long
course divided into 4 semesters, with each semester lasting a period
of 6 months. It is a unique program that provides an in-depth understanding of
various fields including solar, wind energy, biogas & bio mass etc. Through
this course, the students are introduced to the alternate forms of energy such
as OTEC, tidal energy etc. along with the insights on waste heat recovery. The
program also touches upon the recent topics as Green Building (sustainable
construction) and Smart Grid.
About
M.Tech. in Renewable Energy
Renewable
energy is a form of energy generated from natural resources such as sunlight,
wind, rain, tides and geothermal heat which are renewable (naturally
replenished). Renewable energy technologies range from solar power, wind power,
hydroelectricity/micro hydro, biomass and biofuels for transportation.
M.Tech.
Renewable Energy prepares the students in theoretical and practical aspects of
renewable energy technologies and its implementation, energy conservation, and
management. Besides that, it also trains students in important areas of energy
infrastructure, rational use of energy, energy policies and regulations, and
energy-environment interface etc.
Both
renewable energy and alternate energy sectors are growing rapidly due to the
depleting conventional sources and the need of environmentally benign
technologies. The branch of renewable energy contributes in promoting a cleaner
and greener environment and also help in addressing critical issue of energy
security which is quite relevant in developing countries like India.
Eligibility
for M. Tech in Renewable Energy
Candidates
wish to apply for the course should meet the following minimum eligibility
criteria:
·
A
minimum aggregate score of 55% at the level of graduation in B.E./
B. Tech. or equivalent subject in a relevant discipline completed from a
recognized institute. (For IITs and UPES, the minimum percentage required
is 60% in Bachelor’s degree).
·
Candidates
having Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical/ Electronics/ EEE/ Mechanical/ Chemical/
Instrumentation & Control Engineering/ Mechatronics/ Production/
Aerospace/Renewable Energy with a valid GATE score in any of the engineering
disciplines are eligible for admission. Candidates with M.Sc. degree in Physics
/ Chemistry / Material Science with minimum 55% marks.
·
Candidates
awaiting their final year’s exam results can apply too on a provisional basis.
Admission will be confirmed on the basis of graduation results.
Many
institutes prefer students with professional experience, therefore, it is
advised for candidates to have a work experience of a minimum of 24 months.
Also, candidates with two years of relevant work experience are exempted from
GATE score, provided their candidature is sponsored by the employer.
M.
Tech in Renewable Energy: Admission Process
Eligible
candidates are required to qualify the relevant entrance examination followed
by a round of group discussion. Subsequently, qualifying candidates have to go
through additional rounds of personal interview which is the final stage in the
process of selection. The main entrance exams held in India for admission to
M.Tech courses is GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering).
GATE is
an all-India examination that is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of
Science (IISc), Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The
entrance exam is primarily held for admission to post graduate courses in the
field of engineering, technology, architecture and science.
