M.V.Sc in
Livestock Production & Management is a 2-year postgraduate
course in Veterinary science with a specialization in Livestock Production
and Management. Students who have obtained their Bachelor’s degree in
Veterinary Science (B.V.Sc.) from any institute/university recognized by the
veterinary council with a minimum of 55% marks or CGPA not less than 6.0 are
eligible to apply for Master of veterinary science in Livestock Production and
Management course.
Overview
The objective of the
course is to provide specialized training in animal treatment to the extent of
highest expertise. The course also deals with the handling of animal livestock
and business processes that have been newly introduced. Besides surgery, a
person needs to take care of non-spreading of diseases in animals and need to
give advice regarding medicine and vaccination of the same.
The
course also focuses on different advancements in the fields of poultry and
other animal rearing and animal production with emphasis on environmental and
also production management. The course focuses on specific branches of
veterinary science such as equine management in great depth.

student after pursuing the course can work in job opportunities mentioned below
or can pursue Ph.D. in the field of Livestock management and Production.
Eligibility
Students who have
obtained their Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Science (B.V.Sc.) from any
institute/university recognized by the veterinary council with a minimum of 55%
marks or CGPA not less than 6.0 are eligible to apply.
Admission Process
Admission in most
veterinary colleges like Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, Bihar
Veterinary College, Patna, Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi, Bombay
Veterinary Science College, Mumbai, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences,
Bikaner is on the basis of results obtained in the entrance examination
conducted by the concerned universities. For admission in Master’s Degree
program, an All India Entrance Examination is conducted by the Indian Council
for Agricultural Research (ICAR).The exam is generally conducted in the month
of May. The candidate must have secured at least 60% marks to be eligible for
the same.
However, there are some state level entrance exams also, through which admissions are given in the colleges of that particular state like Kerala Engineering Agricultural and Medical Entrance Test that is for the colleges of Kerala.
Career Prospects
The scope for veterinarians is bright
in rural as well as urban areas. In cities, keeping pets is a craze, thus
increasing the demand for private veterinary clinics and hospitals. Growth in
the poultry sector and animal products technology sector has also resulted in
an increase in demand for veterinarians in different sectors of livestock and
poultry. Veterinary science students can work with medical institutions of both
the private and public sectors. The average salary is between INR 5 and 6 LPA.
The
employment areas are among Agriculture sector, government animal husbandry
departments, poultry farms, veterinary hospitals and clinics etc.
The
job profiles for these positions range from Equine Veterinarians, Research
veterinarians, Dairy Consultants, Veterinarians, Academic professors,
Veterinary Technician etc. The compensation and salaries for these individual
jobs are specific and depend largely on the skill-set they have built and the

Equine veterinarians do
vet works and treats horses specifically. With an increase in people
maintaining stables and rearing horses and also horse race being a form of
sport with also others like Polo etc. these doctors have gained more and more
demand and importance.
Research veterinarians

clinical research on human and animal health problems.
Dairy Consultants
Dairy consultants
provide farmers with strategies that could help them to increase and improve
dairy production. Consultants make reports that show the current product yield
and how nutritional changes can potentially improve their numbers. Most of the
consultants take an approach by examining multiple factors such as how well
animals are fed and types of food they consume.
Veterinarian
Veterinarians
promote the health of animals by advising animal owners about feeding,
sanitation measures, and general care. They determine nature of diseases by
examining pets and animals. They also restore health by treating animals
medically. They document actions by completing reports, forms, animal records,
and reporting diseases to public health officials
Veterinary technician
Veterinary technicians
assist other technicians to take care of animals. They may evaluate animal’s
condition, check vital statistics, clean and wrap wounds, collect samples and
medicines for animals. They also work in labs by doing blood tests, urine
analysis, as well as teeth cleaning. They also communicate with pet owners and
update animal’s files.
