MDS
in Oral and maxillofacial pathology deals with nature, characteristics, cause,
effects, and diagnosis of diseases that affect the oral and maxillofacial regions.
The specialty of Dentistry that performs a histopathological evaluation of
specimens relating to oral and perioral tissues and carries out diagnostic
procedures including hematological, cytological and microbiological
investigations is what is called as Oral Pathology and Microbiology. Adequate
knowledge on the structures, development, and functions of the teeth,
supporting tissues and jaws in the orofacial region and adequate knowledge of
anomalies, lesions, and diseases affecting the orofacial region and the
importance of etiology and pathogenesis in oral disease is provided by the
department to the undergraduates. MDS in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology
is a post graduate Dentistry course that has course duration up to 3 years. The
minimum eligibility criteria for the course is minimum aggregate score 55% in
Bachelor in Dental Science (B.D.S). This course comprises of 12 subjects of
study along with practical experience.
Postgraduates
are trained so as to ensure higher competence in both general and special
pathology dealing with the nature of oral diseases, their causes, processes,
and effects.
Overview
MDS in Oral and
Maxillofacial Pathology is the dentistry course that deals with nature,
identification and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial
regions. This is a science investigation that causes processes and effects of
these diseases. The practice includes research, diagnosis of diseases using
clinical, radiographic, microscopic, biochemical or other examinations and
management of patients.
It
is Beneficial for the student to demonstrate knowledge of the language of
pathology and understanding of the processes of cellular adaptations to
disease, cell injury and death, environmental factors in disease, developmental
and genetic factors in disease, inflammation and wound repair, neoplasia, and
vascular hemodynamic. The candidates can also join government organizations
like public health foundation of India or other government and private owed
dental hospitals.
Scope
The fast increasing
rates of oral cancer and manifestations of other systemic diseases to the oral
and maxillofacial region require oral pathologist and can be definitely
benefitted by the nurturing in the field of Oral Pathology.
As
per the Dental Council of India (DCI), oral pathology and microbiology are one
of the recognized branches under dentistry. Therefore, oral pathology is in
turn, related to medicine as itis not only a branch of dentistry but also of
pathology like other branches of pathology including neuropathology,
neuropathology, hematopathology, pediatric pathology, dermatopathology, and sociopath
logy, etc. Oral pathology is also a recognized branch of pathology, which has
already been acknowledged by the Royal College of Pathologists of the United
Kingdom.
Eligibility
The candidates who have
completed their higher education that is B.D.S as their major discipline with
at least minimum of 55%aggregate marks obtained in their exams are
eligible for this course. Some institutions consider the score in the entrance
tests based on the subjects covered and may consider that scores also.

some institutes conduct entrance exams and there would be personal interview
carried by the institute that varies or depends up on the institutes.
