LL.M. in Constitutional Law is a 2- year post-graduate course, which involves an advanced study of the relationships between different entities within a State, namely the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary. The course covers fundamentals of constitutional laws that apply to each individual, designed to ensure no individual’s fundamental rights are violated.

The basic criterion of eligibility for pursuance of the course is L.L.B (Bachelor of Laws) or an equivalent qualification from a recognized university. In India, the average fee charged for the course ranges between INR 3 and 5 Lacs.

Overview

The course essentially aims to foster in eligible candidates, a meaningful understanding of basic philosophical tenets of Constitutional Law, and to train them in the fundamental legal structures and concepts that are found in constitutions across the world, such as basic rights, rule of law, judicial review, systems of governance, etc.

In nations without constitutions, laws such as customary law, statutory law, human rights and civil liberties and conventions are present, and are examined within this course.

Eligibility

Candidates aspiring for admission to the course need to have attained either a 3- year long LL. B degree, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized university, with a minimum aggregate score of 55% (50% for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC).

Many reputed institutes across the country prefer candidates with professional experience, so candidates are advised to gain a work experience of about one year, before applying for the course.

Admission Process

For admission to the course, eligible candidates are required to clear an entrance exam, conducted at any of State, national, and university levels, followed by a round of group discussion. Subsequently, a round of personal interview needs to be cleared by qualifying candidates, for further assessment and selection.

Magistrate/Judge

They arbitrate advice, adjudicate, or administer justice in a court of law. They also sentence defendants in criminal cases according to government statutes and determine liabilities of defendants in civil cases.

They present cases in court and advice on every aspect of litigation. Advocates receive their work and fees from solicitors, who transfer clients to them in cases that go to court.

 

Law Officer

They provide legal advice to clients after going through their cases.

 

Law Expert

They assist solicitors, give legal advice, research and prepare cases, and write legal documents, etc.

 

Public Prosecutor

They are assigned to operate in specific areas of the law, such as traffic violations or juvenile offenses. In smaller offices, they may be responsible for all aspects of criminal prosecution.
