Overview

M.S. in Ophthalmology is a postgraduate course in medicine that involves an advanced study of the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eye. An Ophthalmologist is a specialist in medical and surgical eye problems. The curriculum includes components such as Orbital and Ocular Anatomy, Gross anatomy, Histology, Ocular Physiology, Ocular Pathology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology in relation to Ocular Immunology.

The MS Ophthalmology program provides a solid foundation for the pursuit of a research career. Master’s in surgery or M.S in Ophthalmology is a postgraduate course in the field of medicine and sciences that are mainly involved with the advance study of anatomy, physiology and diseases of an eye. 

It is a postgraduate Ophthalmology that makes you an Ophthalmologist who is a specialist in medical and surgical problems. The course includes orbital and ocular anatomy, Gross anatomy, Histology, Ocular Physiology, Ocular Pathology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology concerning ocular immunology. The course also imparts the opportunities for ophthalmologic research in clinical surgery settings like fine microsurgery, using the operating microscope, and intraocular surgery or vitreoretinal surgery of the eye. It is beneficial to deliver total eye care, meaning vision services, eye examinations, medical and surgical eye care, diagnosis and treatment of disease, and visual complications that are caused by other conditions, like diabetes. The Course is beneficial to give treatment based on the assumption that treating the parts of the visual system with the use of medicines, surgery, diet, and other therapies will therefore treat the underlying eye problem. Ophthalmologists are specially trained to provide the full spectrum of eye care, from prescribing glasses and contact lenses to complex and delicate eye surgery.

As our world’s population is increasing every day, the demand for ophthalmologists will be continued and the job opportunities will always present. The people who have completed their residency training can go on to pursue fellowship training in Ophthalmology subspecialties. Aspirants who wish to become licensed medical professionals, graduates need to hold a medical degree and complete a residency programme.

Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for MS Ophthalmology are:

·         Candidates who wish to study this should have passed an M.B.B.S. degree with at least 50% marks from a recognized university board.

·         Some of the very reputed universities and institutes conduct an entrance examination for admission.

Admission Process

For admission to the course, eligible applicants need to:

·         Have MBBS or equivalent qualification, from an MCI- (Medical Council of India) recognized university or equivalent.

·         Have been registered trainees in the relevant surgical training program from a recognized college.

·         qualify an online test followed by a round of counselling

·         Have scored a pre-set minimum aggregate score in the last qualifying examination.
