Overview
In
Indian System of Medicine herbal drugs play an important role in preparing or
in manufacturing the Ayurvedic formulations. The drugs may comprise of whole
plant or different parts of the plant, which are used singly or in combination
to make compound formulations. Majority of the crude drugs are obtained from
the plant sources where as very less percentage is derived from animal and
mineral sources. The use of plant drugs however demands correct "Identification"
and "Characterization". Pharmacognostical studies help in developing
Pharmacopoeia' standards and for identification of authentication of drug
material for various formulations in which these drugs are used in different
pharmacies. The current Pharmacognostical methods to identify a herbal plant
are based on their chemical analysis or by morphological examination of the
plants and by microscopical/anatomical studies. Thus pharmacognosy is a rapidly
developing science which deals with the complete and systematic knowledge of
crude drugs which will be useful to mankind in order to relieve diseases in
human beings and as well as it helps for the manufacturers or in pharmacies.
One
of the important aspects of the pharmacognosy is to identify correctly the
crude drugs used as such in medicine or as sources for commercial exploitation
by drug industries, pharmacies or for exporter. Anatomical characters/structure
are most likely to provide evidence for correct identification concerned with
the inter relationships of larger groups such as families or in helping to
establish the real affinities of genera of uncertain taxonomic studies. Anatomy
sometimes proves very much helpful for individual identification. Each families
of different plants/drugs will have specifying anatomical characters, for
example in case of cucurbitaceae family, vascular bundles are of bi collateral
type, in Amaranthaceae family exhibits anomalous secondary growth by forming
successive collateral bundles.
The
pharmacognostical method involves in identifying the crude drugs by studying
their macro and microscopic characters. The traditional system of medicine
derives more than 85% of the drugs from the plant source. Drug came in to
existence from very early times to alleviate pain and cure the diseases. Drug
play an important role in Ayurveda, the identification of drugs is of paramount
importance for the survival of traditional system of medicine. It is also found
that often substitutes and adulterants are sold in the crude drug markets from
where the physicians of today and drug manufacturers procure their raw drug for
daily requirements. Thus there is ur-gent need to undertake some of the
pa-rameters like taxanomical, pharmacognostical and phytochemical characters.
The various exomorphic characters found in the plants/drugs help in the taxonomic
method of identification.
