Overview
Diploma
in Critical Care Nursing is an advanced nursing training program. This course
is also know by the short name of DCCN. The main aim of this program is to
inculcate and develop critical care nursing skills and knowledge in nursing
professionals (RNs and RNRMs). The training imparts advanced nursing skills and
knowledge to RNs and RNRMs. Students (Nursing professionals) are trained to
provide nursing services to patients in critical condition (those admitted to
the ICU or any other intensive care setup). DCCN course has been designed to
develop the critical care nursing workforce in India. Critical Care Nurses
serve patients in ICU or other intensive care setup by applying advanced
nursing knowledge and skills.
Diploma
in Critical Care Nursing course’s main aim is to impart advanced nursing skills
and knowledge to nursing professionals. Important subjects present in the
academic program are related to critical condition management and critical care
nursing practice. Some such subjects are- Nursing care in critical care nursing
and nursing practice in critical care nursing.
Critical
care medicine is a well-evolved branch of medicine over the past two decades in
India. The efforts to scientific meaningful service in critical care should be
established through research and training as a postgraduate specialty. Indian
Society of Critical Care Medicine (ISCCM) established in 1993 in India, is an
association of ‘Intensivists’ playing a major role in leading growth to
critical care medicine practice, teaching & training. The establishment of
a structured curriculum-based training course in a postgraduate teaching
institute like Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute will
enhance the research dimension in critical care medicine. The department aims
at starting DM Critical Care Medicine course as a tandem process.
Objectives

To
train a resident to become a competent ‘expert’ in the field of critical care
medicine capable of acquiring the role of a Consultant of the specialty.

To
acquire knowledge of the theoretical basis of the critical care specialty
including basic medical sciences foundations & research.

To
develop appropriate skills, attitude & practice for optimal, ethical,
patient-centred practice of critical care medicine.
·
To
build a ‘scholar’ in adult critical care medicine with a lifelong commitment to
dedicated efforts of learning, applying and disseminating the knowledge.
Eligibility
·
Candidates
with GNM / BSc Nursing/ MSc Nursing/PG Diploma are eligible to apply for this
course.
·
The
graduate qualification must be from a University and recognized by Nursing
Council of India.
Career
Prospects
After
completing the course, one may rise through the ranks and get the role/job post
of critical care nurse. Critical Care nursing is much more challenging than
normal nursing service. To thrive in that role, one must possess advanced
knowledge and skills. That’s why Critical Care nurses are in huge demand. They
are usually paid more than nurses offering normal nursing service.
